Stress Management In The Workplace

Today is National Stress Awareness Day so let’s take a step back and ask, how are you? The truth is everyone at some point will be stressed in the workplace. Today why not do a self-evaluation on the last time you felt stressed and what you did to overcome it. Or have a read below and hopefully you will find a way to implement these tips if you are feeling stressed in the workplace.

Put Your Health First

By focusing on what you can control like diet and exercise, by paying attention to your physical and mental health you are putting yourself in the best condition for the workplace and will be better able to deal with stressful situations. This will help you identify or avoid scenarios where you might feel fatigue or lack of focus.

Identify What Makes You Stressed

If you can identify the situations that increase your stress you will be able to single out the triggers. With this information you can see what’s coming and can get the support you need before it becomes overwhelming. A business is a team; you are all working towards the same goal.

Don’t Hide Your Stress

Has it ever occurred to you that management don’t know how you feel? They might be completely unaware of what they are doing. Management may not know that their expectations are unrealistic or that you are doing the job of more than one person. Talk to them and you will probably find a common ground on what is and isn’t achievable in the workplace.

Always Strive For a Better Work Life Balance

There are more important things in life than work. Realistically what is the worst that can happen? If you do lose your job you will eventually find another one. But if you priorities work over everything else then you are wasting your life, life won’t wait for you to finish. Make time for friends, family or hobbies. Otherwise why are you working so hard, this stress is for nothing.

Try and Be Organised

Everything is better with a list. Start breaking your day down into manageable chunks of work. If you don’t have time on paper you won’t have time in the work day. Show your boss your process and let them know you are organised and working at full capacity.

Only Take On Manageable Workloads

Learn the word no. We all find this hard to say. Staff never want to look like they can’t cope or that they aren’t efficient but if things are getting too much for you then you are not helping yourself or the company. Doing one task properly is always better than doing two tasks poorly. Impressing your boss should not be above your health and happiness.

Treat yourself this Stress Awareness Day, do something for you. Buy that muffin, order that handbag, go see that band, book that holiday. Have something to look forward to at the end of a stressful day, whether it be big or small you deserve it.
