5 Ice Breakers You Could Use In Your Next Meeting
Aren’t meetings fun? Everyone loves a good meeting, especially the person leading it. If that’s you then how do you introduce yourself, how do you get the ball rolling and how do you make everyone feel comfortable in the moment? Here are 5 ice breakers to use in your next meeting.
Who are you and where are you from?
Let’s start with a classic. Get everyone to introduce themselves and one fact about where they came from. If you were asked about one interesting fact about your home town, what would it be?
What’s your favorite theme song?
You can tell a lot about a person by the shows and movies they watch. It’s not a question that many would expect so it can turn up some very entertaining answers. Who knows, maybe you’re not the only one who loved the James Bond Jr opening theme.
What’s the best part of your workday?
This is a good one for meetings that have multiple departments attending. There is a chance that one department doesn’t know what the other does so this icebreaker is a good opening to help bridge that gap.
One lie two truths
This is a fun one that works best with small groups. Ask attendees to explain their role with one lie and two truths. The fun comes in trying to spot which one is made up. You end up learning a lot about the people in the meeting and have some fun along the way.
Most Embarrassing Work Moment
Get everyone to share an embarrassing safe for work moment. This is a good way to humanise everyone in the group and shows that we’re not perfect and it’s okay to let your guard down once in a while. It’s always a good idea as the head of the meeting to go first. Once while working in a stockroom, I was handed labels that said Turkey. I was then asked by a senior member to go get the labels for Chicken. I did this without thinking and everyone had a good laugh at the person trying to get delivery dockets for a country called Chicken.
These are some of our favorite ice breakers and they are great when it’s a room full of new people. They each work differently depending on the size of the group so why not experiment or alter the above examples. A good icebreaker can break the professional tension, end the awkwardness and set you up for a productive meeting.
