Get Some Exercise In to Your Work Day
So what can you start doing today that will help you get on track for a healthier lifestyle?
The most important thing is to keep within your own capabilities. Start small but set big goals.
Make your commute a workout
This is a simple one but is easier said than done. If you get the train/bus/luas/ DART etc. to work, then maybe try getting off a stop earlier and walking some of the distance, yes it will take longer to get to work but over time it will also lead to health benefits like not being out of breath from walking to the water cooler and back.
Gradually build it up, one stop becomes two and two stops becomes a half train journey, half bike ride to the office.
What are you having for lunch, fitness?
The most important thing you can do while on lunch is fuel up for the rest of the day. The second most important thing isn’t stream a TV show or checking out memes, its heading outside, getting some air and taking a 15 minute power walk.
This is a great way for anyone who is looking to get back into regular exercise but doesn’t want to start at the GYM. Gradually build up your time and distance and eventually your walk might turn into a run.
Take short “active breaks” during the workday
It’s not healthy to sit at your desk all day, how about at the top of every hour you try and take a small walk around the building in order to get some stretches done. Or, if you can’t leave your desk here is a great article on how to get some stretches done at work: WEBMD
If you are lucky enough to have a sit/stand desk then try and use the standing position a few times throughout the day. Otherwise, make sure to take small active breaks where you can do a stretch your legs and get some water.
Go the long way
Speaking of getting some water, the next time you need a drink or to use the toilet, try and use the one furthest from your desk. If this is on another floor then maybe consider using the stairs. If you are wearing a fitness tracker then this is a good way of adding a few extra steps to your day. They all add up.
Start or join a sports club at work
The chances are there are a few people in your office who feel the same and want to start some form of exercise. It might just take one of you to suggest a regular game of 5 aside or even an after work walking group.
Does your company have a sports and social club? If so, why aren’t you using that to get more active workouts into your lifestyle?
It’s National Fitness Day, so there’s no better day to give these recommendations a go.
