Working From Home
Visualise your commute to work is from bed to the couch. No more traffic jams, no more getting in trouble for microwaving salmon at lunch and no more stress. That’s the dream of working from home. In theory it’s the perfect solution to your workday hassles but if you are seriously considering making the move to working from home, it is important to look at the pros and cons first.
Pros of Working from Home
Get through the Workload
Imagine opening up your emails on a Monday morning and
actually reading one without a distraction or interruption. Think of the things
you could get done first thing in the morning if you weren’t completely drained
from the commute to the office and had just pure silence.
Communications Expert
Phone and emails are your best friends. You’ll become a
master of writing an email in the correct tone or finding out who to call in
different situations. This means you’ll be more productive and less time is
wasted.
Freedom and Convince
There’s no place like home and when you work from home
you have the choice to make your own decisions and make a nice cup of tea from
your own kettle, now that would be nice!
Independent
A lot of tasks on your list can be done when you want to,
you won’t have anyone to constantly check on your work. Yes you still need to
get everything done but having that control can really help with productivity.
Cons of Working from Home
Clocking Out
A lot of people who work from home will often say their
biggest issue is finishing up for the day. It’s almost a guilty feeling of
finishing up at 5:30pm and already being home. This can result in you working
an extra thirty minutes followed by going back later to check one email or just
finishing one more job before calling it a night. It can become an endless
workday.
Isolation
People need people. Feeling out of the loop can play on a
person’s mind. Make sure you have as much interaction with people in your spare
time if you are going to be on your own all day at work.
Slacking or Fear of Slacking
It can be very easy to fall into a pattern of
procrastination where you end up being unproductive or get accused by other
staff members of not doing your job.
Technology
A solid internet connection is vital. Without it you
can’t really be effective, especially if you work in an industry where the
majority of your software and files live on the cloud.
Comfort
Is your home office as comfortable as the workplace you
wanted to get away from? Do you have access to ergonomic chairs and sit/stand
desks?
We Recommend
- Go in once a fortnight for meetings, social
interaction or to remind people you exist - Buy a comfortable chair. You are going to be
sitting in it for the majority of the day, so maybe don’t just go for the
cheapest one you can find. - Have tea coffee. Make yourself a canteen station
and fill it with the goodies that you like - Keep it professional, always strive to be better
and hit deadlines. Show staff that it was the right call giving you that
freedom
